1841 Census - Evan Davies |
The 1841 census records an Evan Davies living on Anfield Street, his occupation shown as 'Carrier'. This may be an error by the enumerator in recording the street as Anfield Street as opposed to Enfield Street, which leads up to Market Square, or it is possibly that the name changed slightly over the years. His is the fourth household listed on the census and the Swan Inn was at No.4.
The following directory from 1842 confirms that Evan was a retailer of beer and was almost certainly the landlord of the Swan Inn. Another Evan Davies was also working in Clun at this time, as the landlord of the Six Bells on Church Street as the directory record below attests.

1842 Pigot & Co Directory of Clun |
Evan Davies sadly passed away in the 1840s and I can find no trace of the Swan Inn as a business after that time. These days, it is a private residence called 'Old Stone Cottage' but if you look closely, there is still reference to the Inn evident in the nameplate of the property, which has a Swan at its centre.
